How do you plan a visit to Riquewihr, and is it worth the trip?

Updated on

In brief

  • Riquewihr is about 20 minutes by road from Colmar and about 55 minutes from Strasbourg, and it has no train station.
  • The Dolder, the 25 m gate tower built in 1291, still marks the top of the Riquewihr main street.
  • Fluo bus line 816 links Colmar station to Riquewihr in about 30 minutes, with four departures on Sundays.
  • The 2026 Riquewihr Christmas market opens every day from November 27 to December 20.

Why Riquewihr is worth your time

Riquewihr is a walled wine village on the Alsace Wine Route (Route des Vins d'Alsace), listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its half-timbered houses, town walls and gate towers survived World War II with very little damage, although the front line ran close by in the winter of 1944 to 1945. Vineyards climb right up to the walls.

The village is small enough to walk end to end in a few minutes, yet dense with detail: carved beams, courtyards, wells and old shop signs. It is also a working wine village, with the Schoenenbourg and Sporen Grand Cru vineyards on its slopes. Most visitors come from Colmar, the nearest town, or as a day out from Strasbourg.

What to see in Riquewihr, one sentence each

Riquewihr packs its sights into one main street and a few side lanes inside the walls, so you can see the essentials in 2 to 3 hours. Each sentence below covers one stop on its own, from the gate towers to a wine tasting, so you can pick what fits your time and skip the rest.

  • The main street of Riquewihr climbs gently from the lower end of the village to the Dolder, lined with half-timbered houses, wine shops and courtyards worth a look.
  • The Dolder, the 25 m gate tower built in 1291, holds a small museum on the history of the fortified town, open on weekends from spring to October and daily in high summer.
  • The Thieves' Tower (Tour des Voleurs), a former prison with a torture chamber, connects to a 16th-century winegrower's house and opens daily from April to October.
  • The town walls of Riquewihr are best seen from the lanes just inside them, away from the crowds on the main street.
  • The Dopff & Irion cellar, in the Château de Riquewihr courtyard in the old town, opens its shop every day, and individual visitors can taste at the counter without an appointment.
  • The Schoenenbourg and Sporen Grand Cru vineyards rise on the slopes around Riquewihr, and a short walk up the farm tracks gives you the classic view over the rooftops.

Inside the walls, the streets are cobbled and the main street slopes up toward the Dolder. Wear flat shoes, and plan a rest stop if anyone in your group has bad knees.

How do you get to Riquewihr from Strasbourg or Colmar?

Riquewihr has no train station, so the train only takes you as far as Colmar. From Strasbourg, the TER regional train reaches Colmar in about 30 minutes; from Colmar station, Fluo bus line 816 reaches Riquewihr in about 30 minutes. By car, Riquewihr is about 55 minutes from Strasbourg (about 70 km) and about 20 minutes from Colmar.

Departures on line 816 are limited, and on Sundays only four buses leave Colmar for Riquewihr, so check the Fluo timetable before you go. The last bus from Riquewihr back to Colmar leaves around 18:15 (17:45 on Sundays). Until October 11, 2026, the seasonal Kutzig shuttle also links Colmar with Riquewihr, Kaysersberg and other wine villages from Friday to Sunday. From November 27 to December 20, 2026, the Christmas shuttles from Colmar station serve Riquewihr from Friday to Sunday.

Driving? Leave the car in the paid car parks outside the walls, such as the Parking du Vignoble; the old town is for walking. On Christmas market weekends, the Perles de Noël park and ride at NaturOparc in Hunawihr runs a shuttle to the village.

FJ13 is not the best option if you are one or two people staying in Colmar and only want Riquewihr: the bus is cheap and works on weekdays. A shared group tour also gives a solo traveler better value.

When is the best time to visit Riquewihr?

The best time to visit Riquewihr is a weekday morning in May, June, September or October, when the vineyards are green or golden and the main street is still quiet. Coach groups arrive from mid-morning and fill the main street until late afternoon, so arriving before 10:00 or staying after 16:00 makes a real difference.

Harvest usually runs from late August or September into October, when tractors and grape trailers share the lanes around the village. In 2026 the Alsace harvest opened on August 18, the earliest date on record, so much of the picking came early that year.

December is the busiest month. The 2026 Riquewihr Christmas market opens every day from November 27 to December 20, and Saturdays are crowded; come on a weekday, and see the village Christmas markets to pair Riquewihr with Kaysersberg or Ribeauvillé. January and February are the quietest months, but the Dolder and Thieves' Tower museums are closed.

Visiting Riquewihr with FJ13 private driver

FJ13 drives visitors from Strasbourg or Colmar hotels to Riquewihr in a private van, with self-guided time in the village and no bus timetable to watch. Pick-up in Colmar costs the same as from Strasbourg. On FJ13 wine days, Riquewihr is where you taste at the Dopff & Irion cellar in the old town.

The Alsace Wine Route private day tour pairs Riquewihr with Obernai, Kaysersberg and Colmar, with tastings at Dopff & Irion and Domaine Weinbach. The Alsace Grand Cru wine tour goes deeper into the Grand Cru vineyards, and the Colmar, Riquewihr and Haut-Koenigsbourg day tour adds the castle. With less time, the Alsace villages half-day tour covers two villages in 4 to 5 hours.

Your driver knows the region and shares local tips along the way. Tolls and parking are included; tastings are not. The price is per van, for 1 to 7 passengers. Build your day in the quote configurator.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours do you need in Riquewihr?

Two to three hours covers the main street, the Dolder, the walls and a wine tasting. Add an hour for lunch or a walk up into the vineyards. Riquewihr is easy to pair with a second village the same day.

Can you taste wine in Riquewihr without an appointment?

Yes, at many cellars. At Dopff & Irion, individual visitors can taste at the counter without booking, and the cellar shop opens every day. Groups are asked to contact the estate ahead.

Is Riquewihr too crowded to enjoy in October?

Not if you time it. October weekends and school holidays bring coach groups at midday, but weekday mornings stay calm. Arrive before 10:00, or come back in the late afternoon when day visitors leave.

Are the Riquewihr museums open in winter?

Mostly not. The Thieves' Tower opens from April to October, and the Dolder museum opens from spring to October, plus Christmas market weekends. In January and February, you see Riquewihr from the streets only.

Is it worth staying the night in Riquewihr?

Yes, if you like quiet. Once the day visitors leave in the evening, the streets empty out. You need a car or a driver for the rest of the region, because buses to Colmar stop in the early evening.

Can you see Riquewihr in half a day from Strasbourg?

Yes, by car or with a driver. The drive is about 55 minutes each way, which leaves about 2 hours in the village within 4 to 5 hours. By train and bus, plan on a full day.
