Why Eguisheim is worth your time

Eguisheim is a wine village just south of Colmar, built in concentric rings around its castle, so the streets curve in circles instead of running straight. It is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, it is mostly flat, and it is one of the closest wine villages to Colmar, which makes it an easy half day. Winegrowers still live and work inside the rings.

What to see in Eguisheim, one sentence each

Eguisheim is small enough to see on foot in a morning or an afternoon, and most of what matters sits on two rings of streets around the central square. Each sentence below stands on its own, so you can pick what fits your time and skip the rest.

  • Place du Château is the heart of Eguisheim, with the Chapelle Saint-Léon IX, consecrated in 1894 on the site of the old castle keep.
  • The Chapelle Saint-Léon IX honors Bruno d'Eguisheim, the Eguisheim-born pope Leo IX, with painted vault medallions of seven scenes from his life.
  • The outer ring street, Rue du Rempart, follows the old village walls and is the best walk for half-timbered houses and flower boxes.
  • The Saints-Pierre-et-Paul church keeps its old bell tower and a 13th to 14th century painted wooden Vierge Ouvrante (Opening Virgin) in the portal.
  • The Three Castles of Eguisheim (Wahlenbourg, Dagsbourg and Weckmund) are three sandstone keeps on the hill above the village, free to visit.
  • The Eichberg and Pfersigberg Grand Cru vineyards rise just outside Eguisheim, crossed by a marked vineyard trail (sentier viticole).
  • Winegrowers' courtyards inside the rings open onto the street, and many sell their wine directly.

The Three Castles sit on the Route des Cinq Châteaux, a 14 km road through the hills. For the wider region, see the Alsace Wine Route.

Eguisheim is on the Véloroute du Vignoble d'Alsace (EuroVelo 5) bike route. Until October 11, 2026, the seasonal Kutzig shuttle also links Colmar with Eguisheim.

Driving? Use the car parks around the village, not the blue zone spaces, which are limited to 20 minutes.

FJ13 is not the best option if you stay in Colmar and only want Eguisheim: take bus 830, ride a bike, or take a short taxi ride. A private driver makes sense from Strasbourg, on a Sunday, or when you want to add two or three villages.

When is the best time to visit Eguisheim?

The best time to visit Eguisheim is a weekday morning in May, June, September or early October, when the vineyards are green or turning gold and coach groups have not arrived yet. Late afternoon is the second quiet window. Summer weekends and December Saturdays are the busiest days in Eguisheim.

Harvest season runs through September and early October, when tractors and grape trailers share the lanes with visitors.

In 2026, the Eguisheim Christmas market runs from November 27 to December 30, closed December 24 to 26. Eguisheim with FJ13 private driver

FJ13 is a private transport company with driver, based in Entzheim next to Strasbourg. For Eguisheim, FJ13 picks you up at your hotel in Strasbourg, or in Colmar at the same price, and drives you between wine villages on your own timing. The price is per van, for 1 to 7 passengers, and depends on duration and itinerary.

Eguisheim pairs well with villages a short drive north: Turckheim is about 15 minutes away, Kaysersberg about 20 minutes and Riquewihr about 20 minutes. In December, the Alsace Christmas markets private tour links Riquewihr, Kaysersberg and Eguisheim, then Colmar after dark. The rest of the year, the Alsace Wine Route private day tour includes tastings at Dopff & Irion in Riquewihr and Domaine Weinbach in Kaysersberg, and you can swap Colmar for Eguisheim. For a deeper wine day, see the Alsace Grand Cru wine tour.

Your driver knows the region and shares local tips along the way, and you keep self-guided time in each village. Tolls and parking are included. On full days you can add a certified guide-conferencier (optional, extra cost). Get a price for your route in the quote configurator.
