BookThis Struthof tour from Strasbourg is for travelers who want to understand what the Second World War meant in Alsace, at their own pace and without a coach group. Former Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp and the European Centre of Deported Resistance Members (CERD)
KL Natzweiler opened on May 1, 1941, to exploit a pink granite quarry. From 1941 to 1945, about 52,000 prisoners of more than 30 nationalities were sent to Natzweiler and its subcamps, and around 17,000 died. The site recommends starting with the exhibition at the European Centre of Deported Resistance Members (CERD), then the former camp, the camp museum and the National Necropolis. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours.

The Alsace-Moselle Memorial tells the history of the people of Alsace and Moselle from 1870 to the building of Europe, with the Second World War at its center: the de facto annexation to the Third Reich in 1940, Germanization, and the forced conscription of about 130,000 Alsatians and Mosellans into the German armed forces, of whom about 30,000 died or went missing. The visit is self-guided through 17 spaces and takes about 2 hours on average.

Frequently asked questions
Is the day cheaper if we skip the stop in Obernai?
No. The price depends on the duration of the service, from pick-up to drop-off, and on the itinerary, not on the number of stops. Skipping Obernai brings you back earlier but does not lower the price. You can use that time for a longer visit at Natzweiler-Struthof instead.
Can we visit Natzweiler-Struthof on a Monday?
No. Natzweiler-Struthof is closed every Monday. The Alsace-Moselle Memorial is open on Mondays, so a Monday day could cover the Memorial and Obernai only. For the full remembrance day, pick a date from Tuesday to Sunday.
Is Natzweiler-Struthof too hard for children to visit?
Natzweiler-Struthof sets no minimum age, but children under 10 must stay with an adult, and the subject is heavy. The Alsace-Moselle Memorial says it shows no violent images that would upset young children, and it gives each child a free activity booklet.
Can we get to Natzweiler-Struthof by train or bus from Strasbourg?
Not directly. The Natzweiler-Struthof site says it can be reached by car or coach only. The train from Strasbourg reaches Schirmeck, near the Alsace-Moselle Memorial, but the camp is about 10 km away, up the mountain. A car is the realistic way to see both sites in one day.
Can someone explain the history at Natzweiler-Struthof in English?
Your driver gives no site commentary. Add a certified guide-conferencier (optional, extra cost), who rides in the van with your group, speaks English and joins you inside both sites. Book ideally 3 weeks ahead. In summer 2026, Natzweiler-Struthof also ran English tours on Tuesdays and Fridays at 14:15, included in the ticket.
Is Natzweiler-Struthof open in January?
No. The annual closure runs from December 24, 2026 to January 31, 2027 inclusive. The Alsace-Moselle Memorial also closes for part of January, so plan this day from February onward, or before December 24.
